Kansas City – Bacon Fest

There are only a handful of festivals across the nation totally dedicated to the love of bacon. As we all know, Kansas City has the best barbecue, but what you might not know is that it also has the best Bacon Fest! This is one of the most fun annual events in Kansas City! And not only is it great fun, but is also supports a great cause. Bacon Fest: The Other Fundraiser is a fundraiser for The Rehabilitation Institute of KC. This wonderful organization provides physical rehabilitation services to youth and adults in the Kansas City area.

A ticket to this year’s Bacon Fest got you a red plastic cup that could be used for all the Ameristar Casino micro brew beer you could drink, plus a sampling of bacon inspired dishes from some of Kansas City’s best eateries and caterers. Some of the delicious offerings included bacon brownies, bacon jam, bacon crème brule, bacon cheddar sausage and a whole hog!

Numerous other bacon goodies were available as well. If that wasn’t enough, there was also a bacon recipe contest, bacon t-shirt contest and a bacon eating contest! The recipe contest was won with a fantastic looking bacon apple pie. The bacon eating contest was won by spunky military wife from Nebraska. She really showed the boys how to compete!

As if this all wasn’t enough fun, there were two great sounding live bands and a shady relaxation lounge with fans and sunglasses sponsored by yelp.com.  Kansas City’s own Farmland Foods gave away their bacon slice samples and the Kansas Pork Association had trendy “stay calm and eat pork” aprons and gave away $250 worth of bacon to one local photo booth participant.

The KPA also sponsored the grand and reserve prize packages for the recipe contest winners.  If there is any way to have more fun with bacon, I’d certainly like to know what it is! Be sure to put Bacon Fest on your agenda next year. You will not regret it. I bacontee it.

Until next time,
Chris

Studley – Cooking on the Cottonwood

Each fall, the Friends of the Cottonwood Ranch hold one of my most anticipated yearly events; Cooking on the Cottonwood. The Cottonwood Ranch, located near the small agricultural community of Studley, Kansas is a historically significant sheep ranch once owned by wealthy British immigrants.

The Friends of the Cottonwood Ranch host many fun activities including sheep dog trials and Christmas festivities, but as a serious foodie, my favorite yearly activity is the cook off.

Ranchhouse

Not only do they have a barbecue contest, but this year, they had a pie contest, cookie bakeoff and a chili contest. It’s a food lover’s dream!  Proceeds from the event go to support a very worthy cause.  Money raised is used to support, maintain and conserve the historic property.

This year, I was fortunate enough to judge delicious barbecued pork ribs from thirteen different teams, on the back lawn of the beautiful ranch house.  If you ever have the opportunity to take a fall road trip in northwest Kansas, be sure to check out the Cottonwood Ranch. The cook-off is a barbecue (and pie, cookies and chili) lover’s delight!

Hey BBQ lovers, yours truly will be smoking up a heap of delicious Kansas City style pork ribs this Friday, July 15th! Come on down to the Prairie Junction in beautiful downtown Morland, Kansas at 5:30 P.M. for a free will offering supper to support the Morland Mercantile and enjoy the best ribs in northwest Kansas!

Tasty ribs you will enjoy!

The Morland Mercantile is a community supported access to food facility and community kitchen that will be opening soon. Construction work is being done now on the historic grocery store building and equipment should be arriving this fall.

Tasty ribs can be enjoyed with traditional sides and even a nice cold one if you wish! Community supporters Alex Leslie and food blogger Christopher Petty will slowly hickory smoke 140 pounds of meaty and perfectly seasoned pork ribs all day until they are just right for your eating pleasure!

I wouldn’t miss these if I were you…

Come on out and get a great meal and support a great cause at the same time… and remember pigs always smell better when they are barbecued!

Until next time, swine and dine!
